Cruise down Kelani River for creating Climate change Awareness.

Environmental Lovers Volunteer Association organized a "Cruise down Kelani River" from August 17th to 19th 2011. The purpose of this initiative was to focus public attention on climatic changes occurring with ever increasing frequency and spread the message that caring for the environment was an urgent imperative.

A multi ethnic and religious group of 21 youth participated in the cruise. Inclusion in the Group of 2 ex-combatants currently undergoing rehabilitation with the BCGR was a most noteworthy feature of this initiative. The Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Major General Chandana Rajaguru RWP,RSP,USP and Dr. ASA Safras attended the ceremony to launch this commendable undertaking.

The Cruise down the river commenced at Sri Pada, which is the source of the Kelani River. During the twelve-day boat ride down the river, the 2 trainees representing the rehabilitation bureau had the opportunity to join their colleagues in various environmental observations, yoga classes and leadership training sessions.

The 12-day 150 km cruise was an excellent opportunity to educate the people on both banks of the river on the need to safeguard its waters from pollution. The cruise terminated near Crows Island at Mattakkuliya, the point at which the Kelani River empties in to the sea after its meandering journey during which it undergoes many transformations. The Commissioner General of Rehabilitation was once again at hand to greet the participants at the concluding ceremony of this extremely successful initiative.
