Mannar Rehab Centre closes

The rehabilitation centre at Maruthamadhu, Mannar for former rebels has been closed with effect from May 17, a top official said. The centre functioned under the Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry for former ex LTTE militants. The remaining 340 inmates had been transferred to three rehabilitation centres at Vavuniya, Welikanda and Kandakadu, Rehabilitation Commissioner Brigadier Dharshana Hettiarrachchi said.

At the end of the war 12,165 militants, either surrendered or arrested by the security forces were interned in 24 rehabilitation camps located island wide.

Most of them, having completed their rehabilitation and employment training, were handed over to their relations in stages.

"Now there are only 340 ex-rebels undergoing rehabilitation. However, due to practical problems, Maruthamadu Rehabilitation Camp in Mannar had to be closed, and the inmates have been transferred to the three remaining camps," he said.

Accordingly 122 ex-rebels, including 17 women, were now at Poonthottam in Vavuniya, he said. "There are now 119 in Senapura camp in Welikanda and 99 in Kanthakadu Camp to talling 340, who are currently undergoing rehabilitation process," he said.

He said that after the rehabilitation process, the remaining 340 ex-rebels would be handed over to their families.
