Rehabilitated Youngsters joins village development.

Around 200 former LTTE carders who were being rehabilitated in Poonthottam Rehabilitation Camp in Vavunia had participated in a shramadana campaign in pallikuda recently.

Pallikuda is fishing village which is situated at the edge of Kilinochchi District. There are a number of fishermen, farmers and a few small entrepreneurs in this village. All these young individuals, in their twenties, were able to provide their youthful strength to clean the Pallikuda Reservoir, which has been abandoned for a long time. These young men are trained on masonry and computer operating in their rehabilitation camps.

Pedurupillei Jabenard was the former karate master in Pudukudiiruppu Tiger’s camp. He joined the LTTE as their karate master in 2006. Civilians were ordered to learn and practise karate, under LTTE rule. Karate was a compulsory subject in their school syllabus. It was a must for every student. Jabenard was just a tool for the tigers to maintain their stronghold.

At the end of the war Jabenard surrendered to the Army. He is now rehabilitated. Jabenard had to convert to his traditional livelihood of fishing. It has been a turning point that had the power to change many attitudes. The Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera did not forget to visit Jabenard’s house for lunch. A number of rehabilitees had turned up at the get together patronized by the minister, to meet minister Gajadeera in person.
